History of Step Training Inc.
In response to a perceived need for continued training in Defensive Tactics (beyond a police mandatory yearly qualification course), Myself Defense was created. The company was officially launched in May 2005. The mission of the company was to offer advanced professional training in defensive tactics, as it related directly to law enforcement officers. Weekly classes were offered throughout the Greater Toronto Area and attended exclusively by law enforcement professionals. We worked with GTA police services, OPP, Boarder Services, and in some cases, private security agencies in self-defense.
The company continued with this work until 2012.
In 2012 the company was re-branded and the name changed to Step Training Canada. The new mission of the company was to expand beyond the teaching of physical skills and to begin to address science-based training practices through reality-based training. Although physical skill classes were still being offered, Step Training Canada was now also addressing de-escalation training, communication, professional facilitation, and evidence-based course structure. It was through this process that the A.D.S. Training System © for law enforcement was developed.
In 2013 Step Training Canada entered into a contract with the City of Mississauga, Ontario Canada to develop and deliver use-of-force and de-escalation programs to city security officers. This contract is “ongoing” and has been expanded to include Corporate Security, Transit Officers, Parking Enforcement, and Animal Services.
In 2017 Step Training Canada incorporated to become Step Training Inc.
Step Training Inc. is now in partnership with a number of other training partners offering advanced programs internationally in areas of de-escalation, stress management. mental health and facilitation. We collaborate with other working professionals from many areas of the world, having ongoing work with US Federal Probation, US Marshal Services, Icelandic National Police Service, and police agencies in Canada and US.
In 2017, Step Training Inc. was under contract with the Ontario Provincial Government for 18 months, conducting professional field research into de-escalation, police training, and the development of a new Ontario Decision Making Model. Through this work, over 30 police agencies were visited for the purpose of data collection and research. Research took us across Ontario and as far away as London, England.
Now 2023, Step Training Inc. has over 40 municipal clients, as well as many international partnerships. We offer full-service programs, that include online, in-person, and train-the-trainer opportunities. A number of our courses are accredited and our de-escalation program is offered as an undergraduate course at the University of Toronto. We currently hold training contracts in de-escalation for Toronto Corporate Security and Toronto city staff.
Through dedication and research, our staff and programs continue to get worldwide recognition, as we continue to provide outstanding service to our clients.
