Overview

STEP Training Inc.’s Situational Awareness course is a core component of our evidence-based Professional De-escalation program. Built on over a decade of frontline application and continual refinement, this training provides learners with the practical skills needed to proactively assess risk, remain alert in dynamic environments, and make informed decisions to promote safety and professionalism.

Training Objectives

Participants in this course will learn to:

  • Understand and define situational awareness in practical terms

  • Identify people and recognize hazards within their environment

  • Navigate the levels of awareness—from autopilot to high alert—with a focus on staying within the optimal range of professional observation

  • Apply core components: PerceptionComprehension, and Projection

  • Ask and apply two key questions in any situation:
    What do I know? What do I not know?

  • Practice focused scanning strategies using the Yellow Car Theory

  • Avoid tunnel vision and maintain full environmental awareness
